Education is a subject very dear to me. I'm personally engaged in a life-long project to achieve the status of being 'well-educated'. I don't expect I will live long enough to get there, but it's a goal. I also worry about our public institutions of education, which seem to be failing to turn out a good product. More and more money seems to be spent to turn out a poorer and poorer product. As a country, the US simply has no future if our citizens are ignorant.

Innumeracy in America

Our level of innumeracy in America may be starting to imperil our ability to maintain our civilization. Seems kind of important, doesn't it?

Donor's Choose

Understanding the Basenji

Basenjis can be quite fun to own, but you have to understand the breed and, above all, be smarter than the dog.

Americans Are Ignorant

I've uncovered some horrible statistics. I wish I could say they must obviously be wrong, but they may very well be correct.

Richard Cohen is a butthead

In a column for the Washington Times, Richard Cohen argues that mathematics beyond simple arithmetic (and certainly not the dreaded "percentages") has no place in the life of the average citizen. This explains a lot.

Teaching Intelligent Design

The President has caused a lot of discussion by endorsing the idea of teaching Intelligent Design in schools.

What Does it Mean to be Well Educated?

If Kohn's ideas are from the mainstream of pedagogical thought, it's no wonder the US can't seem to educate it's children.

Methods of Self Education

There are a lot of ways to educate yourself.

Qualities of the Well-Educated

Classifying all of human learning is a daunting task, but what they heck, we'll give it a go.

School Matters

A nice web site for getting statistical information about education.
